This beginning of the year we have received excellent news: our center has been selected in the VII Call for Dualiza Grants, promoted by CaixaBank Dualiza and FPEmpresa, for the project “NEXOS 4.0: 5G and IoT Technology for the Integration of Disadvantaged People Through Agriculture 4.0”.

What is the NEXOS 4.0 Project?

The “NEXOS 4.0” project focuses on exploring advanced solutions based on technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) and 5G mobile connectivity with the aim of revitalizing local agriculture in Bizkaia and promoting social cohesion. Our students from the higher degree cycle of Telecommunications and Computer Systems will lead first-hand this experience that combines technological and social innovation. To achieve this, the project has several key partners:

• Our center, as general coordinator of the project, will focus its efforts on guaranteeing the success and educational impact of “NEXOS 4.0”. Through the ETHAZI challenge-based learning system that we have been developing, the project promises an innovative educational experience, encouraging collaboration and the practical application of learning.

• The Lurre Hurre association of Bermeo, focused on the socioeconomic integration of disadvantaged migrants through organic farming. The project will allow Lurre Hurre to adopt an advanced agricultural model by incorporating IoT solutions such as crop monitoring through key parameters such as soil humidity or temperature. The students of the CIFP Emilio Campuzano LHII vocational training center will be in charge of the design and implementation of the installation, as well as the development of a platform from which the participants of the Lurre Hurre association will access crop data. Likewise, students will learn about the Lurre Hurre project and its challenges first-hand, working on values such as social integration and sustainability.
  
• Another crucial part of the project is the collaboration with the company ArsonData Metering, a Basque technology company dedicated to R&D&I for the intelligent management of water and gas, and which has boosted its growth with the success of its LoRaWAN technology. ArsonData Metering will provide essential technical support to the students participating in the project, in order to successfully implement the installation of the IoT system in the Lurre Hurre agricultural facilities. The participation of this renowned company in the project provides great value to the training of future vocational training technicians.
  

Educational Impact and Beyond

This project represents a unique opportunity for our students, who will work on real challenges, promoting values such as social integration and sustainability. In addition, the project will include the collaboration of students from different professional families, designing innovative technological solutions that will be presented to the Bermeo City Council.

A Competitive and Promising Framework

This edition of the Dualiza Grant Call has been especially competitive, with a total of 308 applications. The 47 centers selected throughout Spain will receive a total of 401,488 euros to develop 30 innovative projects, all characterized by their innovative approach, capacity for social impact and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
